About the event

The Fauré Requiem is a piece of music written for choir and orchestra (think the Detroit Symphony with a big chorus behind them). The Fauré portion is the composer, French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) regarded as one of the most influential composers of his day. The Requiem refers to the text, which was the funeral rite of the Catholic Church prior to the Second Vatican Council (1965), in which we pray for the deceased. Famous composers for centuries have composed a requiem; but for many, Gabriel Fauré’s requiem sits atop them all.

The melodies are captivating and lyrical, the harmonies are lush, it has depth and joy, but it “gets the point.” This is an extremely accessible work and an “easy listen” even for young children or someone who is a classical music novice. This is your perfect on ramp!

Usually in our culture today, we hear requiems performed as concerts in churches or concert halls. Rarely are they heard in a liturgical context. We will be combining the two on November 10! We have hired an orchestra to accompany our very own St. Mary choir to perform this work while incorporating scripture passages and allowing time for reflection and prayer for our loved ones.

The entire performance will last one hour and be filled with absolutely gorgeous music mixed with silence and prayer. We hope to see you on Friday, November 10 to hear this amazing work, performed by our own extraordinary St. Mary musicians and pray with us for our deceased friends and family.

There is no charge for this event, a free will donation will be collected.
